twhirl 0.8.3 - a maintenance release
While twitter is still struggling to get their service fully up and keep it running, they introduced some new glitches over the past days that also affected twhirl. First, their call to retrieve a user’s current rate limit status was completely changed and made twhirl’s built-in auto throttle non-functional. Second, an issue when posting a status update also lead to problems in twhirl.
Those things kept us busy over the last days, and while we don’t have new features to release yet, we are doing a maintenance release today to get the auto throttle back working and also handle posting problems better should they happen again.
Besides fixing those two issues, we also changed a thing introduced in version 0.8.2 that caused some confusion to users. The “hide messages from previous sessions” filtered out all twitter items from timelines that were already displayed in an earlier run of twhirl. While this can be quite cool to not see the old stuff from months ago again and again, a quick restart gave the impression that twhirl did not download messages anymore at all.

We have now slightly changed this feature: the option has been moved from the General configuration tab to the Notify section, and even if you enable it, twhirl will still display those old messages in timelines. But you won’t get notifications for them, and they will also not be marked as “new”.
